At Kayu we value and believe that every woman has the right to develop to her fullest potential and earn a living wage. Our bags are made by women in the Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia. These women are mothers and weaving allows them to work from home, look after their children and also provides them with a source of income.
In 2015 we brought some of our production to America. We now offer custom monogramming on a range of our bags through an on-going training initiative with the Chinatown YMCA (a branch of the YMCA of San Francisco). The women we work with are new immigrants who do not speak English and as a result have difficulty finding jobs. Unfortunately this means that they are often underpaid and often abused. Our initiative provides these women with practical training and an alternative source of income.
