Unite For Sight is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that empowers communities worldwide to improve eye health and eliminate preventable blindness. Unite For Sight applies best practices in eye care, public health, and social entrepreneurship to achieve our goal of high quality eye care for all. In addition to being a leader in providing cost-effective care to the world's poorest people, our Global Health University develops and nurtures the next generation of global health leaders.
75% of blindness is curable or preventable, yet 37 million are needlessly blind. 90% of blind people live in the poorest parts of the developing world and 1.4 million children under the age of 15 are blind. Blindness has an enormous personal, social and economic cost, limiting the education and life choices of otherwise healthy people, and placing a significant weight on family, community, and social and health services. Unsurprisingly, blindness is associated with lower life expectancy.
Unite for Sight's innovative programs have provided the highest quality of care to 1,000,000 of the world's poorest people, including 32,509 sight-restoring surgeries. With just US$20, Unite for Sight is able to perform one sight-restoring surgery in the developing world thereby allowing someone to sew, cook, see their families faces or go to school.
