Exploring: Napa + Sonoma

Exploring: Napa + Sonoma

Looking for a change of scenery? In the bustle of the workweek, it’s easy to forget that serene vineyards, iconic farm scenes, and a slower pace of living rest only a short car trip away. If you’re thinking of escaping to the Napa Valley or Sonoma for a weekend of sips, unforgettable views, and reconnecting with a less-hectic lifestyle, we’ve got you covered with some of our favorite spots to wine—oops, we mean “wind”—down.

Vineyards

Kunde

Kunde Family Winery is like a choose-your-own-adventure book for wine tastings. Feeling laid-back? Sip something amazing on their airy patio. Looking for the height of natural beauty? Opt for the mountaintop tasting to take in the breathtaking 1400-foot-elevation views. At the opposite end of the spectrum, their caves are carved into the volcanic hillside and are home to a glamorous seated tasting experience— the true creme-de-la-creme of their expansive offerings.

Scribe

Rustic-chic vibes abound at this down-to-earth paradise— so much so that we were taking decor notes the whole time. Opt for the food pairing tasting at this ultra-scenic stop on your tour; it’s filled with memorable bites that enhance the experience even more.

Etude

Mixing sustainable practices with old-world winemaking techniques, Etude Wines is a hidden gem seated on a picturesque hillside that’ll make you feel like you just stepped into your favorite Instagrammer’s bucolic fantasy.

Schramsberg

Wall-to-wall sparkling wines? Count us in. Schramsberg’s tasting tours meander through their historic caves (sipping wine by candlelight = true romance), and the winery’s grounds are exquisite. Just try to leave without picking up a bottle or two.

Restaurants

Tasca Tasca

Night owls will flock to this late-night tapas spot filled with Portuguese-tinged flavors and hyper-local ingredients. Balance out a day of wine tastings by ordering one of everything, and be sure to end your night with their olive oil ice cream for an unusual treat.

The Girl And The Fig

Any trip to wine country requires some French bistro classics. The Girl and the Fig delivers gallic standbys—think moules frites and savory pastries—in a cozy, relaxed atmosphere. Stop in for brunch and people-watching, or try dinner and drinks (the Fig Royale, which combines French sparkling wine and house-made fig liqueur, is not to be missed).

El Dorado Kitchen

Fresh and local is the name of the game at this fan-favorite dinner spot. Sip their signature cocktails on the patio to truly get the most of the sophisticated atmosphere.

Hotels

Fairmont Sonoma Inn

A Spanish-style retreat in the heart of wine country. With a Michelin-starred restaurant, a luxurious spa atop an ancient mineral spring, and daily docent-led yoga classes, this Inn epitomizes a relaxing Sonoma experience (and makes it hard to leave).

Things To Do

Achadinha Cheese Tour

The perfect pairing for wine tours: Cheese tours. Achadinha offers farm tours with plenty of cheeses to sample. Or, for a more in-depth experience, roll up your sleeves and try their cheesemaking class which includes lunch (and wine, obviously).

Jack London State Park

Not all of Sonoma and Napa’s wonders are created by vintners. Gorgeous vistas and 29 miles of trails crisscross this beautiful expanse of land, which was home to American icon Jack London during his life. If his creative spirit sparks some inspiration, there are photography workshops offered throughout the year to help you capture the 1400 acres through your own artistic eyes.
